1: You have a virus or hardware malfunction and your computer no longer responds to user input. Your important data can be retrieved by removing the hard drive and connecting it to a functioning system for retrieval. (Note: the hard drive cannot be the malfunction hardware piece).
2: Your hard drive is the malfunction piece. To retrieve your data, the drive must be sent to a data retrieval center where it will be opened up and the disc removed and read by a purpose built machine. This is a last chance option and is quite expensive to perform. (Think of it as brain surgery for your computer.)
